[Domestic Policy] Mainz and Thuringia instead of Brandenburg – How the wrong Elements of the BSW remain

The Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance – For Reason and Justice (BSW) continues to exist. Immediately after its founding the BSW won seats in the state parliaments of Saxony and Thuringia (both on September 1, 2024) and Brandenburg (September 22, 2024). Regarding the 2025 federal election the BSW polled between 5% and 10% but narrowly missed entering parliament (securing 4.98%). However the BSW has largely faded from public view. And of the two coalitions formed at the state level in Thuringia and Brandenburg only the one in Thuringia remains. The following section explores how this initially so promising and initially so successful party failed so completely.

In June 2026, the BSW launched a protest campaign aimed at pressuring the incumbent Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) to resign. This is because two state elections are still scheduled to take place in 2026 in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, 2026, and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on September 20, 2026. [1]

East Germans can stop Merz and his disastrous policies in September! Anyone who votes for the BSW to oust the CDU and SPD state premiers thereby paving the way for a non-partisan premier is also sending Merz into retirement! [1]

But it is striking that the BSW in Thuringia continues to govern alongside the CDU. The BSW is in need of any attention and support it can get given that it is currently polling at only 3% nationwide. Against this backdrop the questions arises as to how this contradiction came about and to what extent it is linked to the low poll numbers. [2]

On October 23, 2023, Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW) and ten other members of the Bundestag left the Left Party (Die Linke) and on January 8, 2024 she and 44 others founded the party BSW. Its founding manifesto lists four key points: economic reason, social justice, peace, and freedom. Economic reason and social justice entail investments in infrastructure, an abundance of well-paid jobs, a welfare state that protects workers, and a tax system that levies taxes on high incomes and assets. The call for peace encompasses a rejection of foreign military deployments by the Bundeswehr and advocates for a sovereign Germany and Europe. [3, p.1-3 , p.3-4 , p.4]
However initial conflicts were already apparent from the start. A survey of the potential BSW electorate has revealed that, in terms of social and economic policy, it is just as close to The Left Party as it is to the economically liberal CDU/CSU and FDP. [4] [4, p.11]

Coalition in Thuringia

However following the state election in Thuringia—but before a government was formed an apparent alliance emerged between the BSW and the CDU against the AfD. It is customary in all German state parliaments and the Bundestag that the oldest member opens the constituent session and has the state parliament president elected. And the office of the state parliament president is a more ceremonial and organizational function. However the election of the President of the State Parliament did not take place, the oldest member of the state parliament, Jürgen Treutler (AfD) was interrupted several times and the session descended into chaos. After the CDU turned to the Thuringian Constitutional Court, the CDU of all parties submitted a motion to change the rules of procedure with the BSW which was passed with 55 yes votes. The right to propose the president of the state parliament no longer lies with the strongest faction which is the AfD. Instead all factions can now propose a candidate in the first round of voting. Furthermore the size of the parliamentary committees was limited to twelve members. As a result the AfD loses its blocking minority from the result of the state election. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]

When the coalition agreement between the BSW, CDU, and SPD was published, it quickly became clear that the Thuringian BSW had barely incorporated its own party platform into the deal. The agreement itself committed unreservedly to the debt brake and its consequences that stifle wealth and investment. Furthermore it already signaled potential cutbacks in other areas. Despite recession and unemployment, immigration is to be encouraged and a shortage of skilled workers is assumed. This effectively means a low-wage policy is being implemented through oversupply. Furthermore, the coalition agreement has placed unreserved support behind the Thuringian Office for the Protection of the Constitution. This is particularly questionable given the serious allegations against the incumbent president of the state office Stephan Kramer (SPD, previously FDP, previously CDU). Kramer (SPD) is said to have classified the AfD as an investigation case without consulting the relevant specialist departments and to have personally compiled the collection of materials for the assessment and is said to have threatened a co-worker with physical violence. In Thuringia Katja Wolf (BSW) became Deputy Minister-President and Minister of Finance. [10, p.118 , p.119 , p.47 , p.50] [11] [12]

According to its medium term financial plan, the Thuringia state government aims for balanced budgets up to and including 2027. Despite the ongoing recession in Germany and the unemployment affecting Thuringia as well there are no plans for an economic stimulus package. However when aggregate demand declines meaning a drop in demand for goods, services, and thus labor, only the state can compensate for the shortfall and reverse the trend of increased saving driven by bad forecasts. Coalition in Brandenburg

When the coalition agreement between the BSW and the SPD was published, it quickly became clear that the Brandenburg BSW had successfully incorporated significant elements of its own party platform into the agreement. The debt brake with its wealth and investments hindering effect was openly criticized. And at the time the debt brake should be avoided at least and at best be abolished. Labor migration was rejected in order to protect the local workforce. And returns as a euphemism for deportations were promised. The Brandenburg coalition agreement has also pledged uncritical support for the Brandenburg Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In contrast to Thuringia there is no scandal of the type and quality in Brandenburg as around Stephan Kramer. In Brandenburg former SPD politician Robert Crumbach (BSW) became Deputy Minister-President and Minister of Finance. [18, p.22 , p.63 , p.12 , p.47 , p.32]

[Domestic Policy] BSW Coalition in Brandenburg - What is possible

Beyond the ambitious coalition agreement the BSW in Brandenburg has sought to implement its own demands. For instance Brandenburg’s Infrastructure Minister Detlef Tabbert (BSW) announced in 2025 that 1,300 social housing units are to be built or renovated with the help of 250 million Euro in state funding. By comparison 1,100 rent-controlled housing units or 200 fewer were subsidized using state funds in 2024. [19] [20]
However alongside social justice and economic promotion the BSW’s profile also includes a commitment to peace and opposition to the new military service scheme. Proceeding from the view that this new scheme introduces conscription through the back door, the Brandenburg BSW issued a call to young people in September 2025 to object to the sharing of their data for the Bundeswehr’s new military service program. A template was also published to enable young people to submit an objection to the data transfer in accordance with the Federal Registration Act. [21] [22] [23]

According to its medium-term financial plan, the Brandenburg state government comprising the BSW and SPD planned for expenditures to exceed revenues starting from 2025. This state government also planned to counter the ongoing recession in Germany and the unemployment affecting Brandenburg. For when aggregate demand declines meaning a drop in demand for goods, services, and thus labor, only the state can compensate for the shortfall and reverse the trend of increased saving driven by bad forecasts. The Consequences

And if one compares the state elections with the federal elections then the BSW lost very differently in the states. As a result it is precisely the BSW in Thuringia that lost the most votes after the state elections in 2024.
The suspicion therefore arises that the BSW's losses in the federal elections depend on the quality of the coalition agreements. The positive reporting from the BSW federal association in Thuringia and the negative reporting from the BSW federal association in Brandenburg seems more like an attempt by the established press to shape an opposition. [27] [28] [29] [30]

Comparison of BSW results from the 2024 state elections with the 2025 federal election [27] [28] [29] [30]

However the BSW is not powerless against violations of its own goals and principles by state branches. In fact BSW state branches are even required to align themselves with the party's goals and principles. [31, p.4]

§8(3)

§8(3)

The organizational units are obliged to do everything to safeguard the unity of the party and to refrain from anything directed against the principles, order, or reputation of the party. They must also require their bodies to adopt the same course of conduct.
If organizational units violate these obligations, the party executive committee or the competent state executive committee is authorized and required to call upon them to comply with these obligations and to draw attention to the possible disciplinary measures under §15.

[31, p.4]

Should BSW state chapters violate the party's own goals and principles, a range of measures of varying severity is available. The BSW federal executive board could therefore immediately decide on measures against the Thuringia state chapter. However a sufficient majority would first need to be secured to ensure the measures are not subsequently declared invalid. Furthermore any action must be taken with due caution as viewed from the outside any internal party conflict provides an opening for attack. [31, p.10]

§14(2)

§14(2)

Violations by members may be sanctioned with the following disciplinary measures::

  1. warning,
  2. the stripping of party offices,
  3. the temporary suspension of the eligibility to hold party offices,
  4. the revocation of other membership rights as well as
  5. expulsion from the party.

§15(2)

§15(2)

Permissible disciplinary measures are the dissolution and exclusion of the organizational unit, as well as the removal of its executive board from office.

§15(3)

The disciplinary measure must be ratified at the next party conference otherwise it ceases to be in effect.

[31, p.10]

Dissolution Brandenburg

Disputes arose within the Brandenburg state government starting in November 2025. When the state parliament voted on two public media treaties 10 of the 14 BSW lawmakers voted against them while the coalition partner SPD and the opposing CDU voted in favor of it. The BSW’s voting behavior in the state parliament followed internal disagreement. Crumbach had previously approved the two public media treaties in the cabinet but the BSW federal executive board rejected them and the Brandenburg BSW also voted against them in an internal vote. The BSW stated that it feared the planned measures for the protection of minors in public media treaties would lead to excessive state intervention. As a result of these disagreements the SPD dissolved the coalition in January 2026, and Deputy Minister-President Crumbach resigned from the BSW. [32] [33] [34] [35] [36]

The new state government comprising the SPD and CDU was sworn in as early as March 2026. At the outset the new Minister of Economic Affairs Martina Klement (CSU) announced her intention to continue the "successful course" pursued in Berlin. Meanwhile the new Finance Minister Daniel Keller (SPD) aims to limit spending and envisages savings in areas including the state administration. [37]
Since January state chairwoman Friederike Benda (BSW) has accused the former coalition partner the SPD of deliberately working toward the collapse of the coalition for months and preparing for a new coalition. It is alleged that since September 2025 the SPD has stalled key political projects to avoid passing measures that would subsequently have to be reversed with a new coalition partner. [38] [39]
Then in March 2026 reports emerged that CDU members had offered money to BSW members to leave the party, and that other parties had allegedly attempted to poach them. Those reportedly involved in the discussions included Crumbach (formerly BSW) and the MPs Reinhard Simon (formerly BSW), Andre von Ossowski (formerly BSW), and Melanie Matzies (formerly BSW), as well as Niels-Olaf Lüders (BSW) who has become the parliamentary group leader. [40]

Consequences Thuringia

The coalition comprising the BSW, CDU, and SPD in Thuringia was spared such consequences. While there was criticism from within the BSW in January 2026 regarding the party's participation in the government, no concrete measures are evident. [41]

Cooperation with the CDU and SPD may be justifiable on parliamentary grounds, yet it stands in clear tension with the principles of the BSW, a party that set out precisely to break with that kind of policy. [41]

However the BSW also tolerates dissent from within its own ranks through the "Mainz Circle" (Mainzer Kreis). Members past and present of this include Katja Wolf (BSW), Steffen Schütz (BSW), Thomas Geisel (former BSW), and Robert Crumbach (formerly BSW). The "Mainz Circle" (Mainzer Kreis) thus brings together politicians from the unpopular Thuringian government including a proponent of the Agenda 2010 social welfare cuts with Geisel (BSW), and Crumbach (formerly BSW) a politician whose ultimate loyalty lay with the SPD rather than the BSW. The fact that the "Mainz Circle" (Mainzer Kreis) much like the party's participation in the Thuringian state government can continue its activities seemingly undisturbed is a sign of the BSW's lack of leadership. [42] [43] [44]

Conclusion

Wagenknecht (BSW) and her allies sought to create a party focused on social issues and one that was above all credible and reliable. Yet ironically these were the very promises they failed to keep. And judging by the polls the BSW is now practically dead. The takeaway is that while one can escape the Left Party (Die Linke) one cannot escape its inherent flaws.
