[Domestic Policy] Quo Vadis Hans-Georg Maaßen 2019-04-20

On September 7, Maaßen contradicted the accusation of the federal government that in Chemnitz manhunts on foreigners have taken place. After a German national was murdered on August 25, 2018 in Chemnitz and two others out of three asylum seekers were injured. According to the police the three victims were attacked without any need for self-defense. [1] [2]

Maaßen was then questioned by various politicians. Later he was accused of having held illegitimate meetings or consultations with the AfD. Maaßen was assumed to have had a closeness and solidarity with the AfD. [4] [5]

On September 18, 2018 it was announced that Maassen should be dismissed as president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz). First Maaßen was supposed to become secretary of state in the Federal Ministry of the Interior. On November 5, 2018 however he put into intermediate retirement. [6] [7]

In February Maaßen then joined the CDU internal group "WerteUnion" (Value Union) for the first time. The "WerteUnion" is a conservative group within the CDU and criticizes the refugee and migration policy of Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and calls for a fundamental programmatic turn of the CDU. During his appearance Maaßen criticized the asylum policy, the suspension nuclear power plants, the introduction of the minimum wage and the gender policy. In particular he warned that IS fighters disguised as refugees pose a major problem. In addition he said that it should not be that party political affiliations are given up in favor of maintaining power and attested that some officials in the CDU have made their own career to be the ruling the agenda. Maaßen himself was dismissed from his post as President of president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz) after he questioned the narrative of the Federal Government.
