[Domestic Policy] What the Spanish Intelligence Service #CNI knew about Abdelbaki Es Satty and the #Terror Attack of #LaRambla 2019-08-23
On August 17, 2017 Younes Abouyaaqoub drove a van into pedestrians on the La Rambla promenade in Barcelona (??Spain) killing 14 and injuring 130 people.
Abouyaaqoub then fled on foot stole a car and killed the owner.
On August 21, he was shot while on the run by the police and about 30 km away from Barcelona in Subirats.

Nine hours after the terrorist attack in Barcelona (Spain) five other people in the same group have also driven a vehicle in a pedestrian in nearby Cambrils (Spain) killing one person and injuring six.
All five responsible persons were shot on the spot by the police.

The night before August 17, an explosion took place in Alcanar (Spain) where Youssef Aalla and alleged mastermind Abdelbaki Es Satty of the same group were killed and the building in which they were found was destroyed. According to the investigating authorities more than 120 gas cylinders exploded when Aalla and Es Satty wanted to build a single bomb out of it. [4] [5] [6]
However previous and new findings paint a more comprehensive image. Es Satty was known to the police for previous crimes. There was information as well as warnings about his radicalization. And Es Satty was an informant of the domestic intelligence service CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia).
From 2008 to 2012 Es Satty served a prison sentence for drug trafficking in Castellon. In prison he is said to have made a special friendship with Rachid Aglif. Aglif served 18-year-old prisoners for the terrorist attack of 11 March 2004 in Madrid which killed 193 people. [7] [8] [10] [11] [12]
In 2014 Es Satty was again convicted of drug trafficking and was to be deported from Spain. However Satty complained that his attempted deportation violated his human rights and ultimately stayed in Spain. Following a successful application for asylum in November 2014, he was allowed to move freely throughout the Schengen area of the EU. [13] Until June 2015 Es Satty was hired as an imam in a mosque in Ripoll (Spain) until he suddenly left. After that Es Satty was in Belgium for three months to look for work there. However the head of a mosque in Brussels (Belgium) has turned to the authorities for suspecting Es Satty of extremism. [1] [14] [15]
In addition to constant communication with Es Satty CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) oversaw the entire group behind the terrorist attacks of 17, August 2017. Here CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) also learned that the group around Es Satty has prepared a terrorist attack. [18] Publico confirms La Vanguardia's claim that Es Satty began acting as an informant for CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) when Es Satty was jailed for drug trafficking. According to Publico his activity as an informant and not his claim was the reason his asylum application was successful in November 2014. [16] [19]
The group around Es Satty made various trips including to Switzerland, Germany, France and Belgium. All of these trips took place in December 2016 and were overseen by the CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia). The CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) tracked not only the movements but also their conversations. In this way CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) obtained detailed information about their plans. [20]
The recruitment of jihadists from 2006 in which Es Satty was said to be involved was also considered. Striking is that Es Satty never stood trial for this. And the Catalan regional party (Partit Democrata Europeu Catala/PDeCAT) accuses the social democratic government of Pedro Sanchez (Partido Socialista Obrero Espanol/PSOE) in connection with the terrorist attacks from August 17, 2017 of negligence. Es Satty has been involved in the recruitment of jihadists in 2006 in which five Islamists were arrested for sending jihadists to fight in Iraq. [2] [7] [8] In 2003 Es Satty shared an apartment with the later terrorist Salafia Jihadia. Jihadia carried out a suicide attack with eleven other persons in Casablanca (Morocco) on May 16, 2003 killing 33 more people and injuring over 100 people. The Old Link to the CNI
According to findings from November 2017 Es Satty was listed as an informant at the Spanish domestic intelligence service CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia). After research from La Vanguardia the contact began when Es Satty was jailed for drug trafficking. And ccording to La Vanguardia Es Satty was forced into drug trafficking by jihadists. This raises the question why CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) did not prevent the terrorist attacks of 2017. [16]The New Link to the CNI
According to findings from the July 2019 from Publico however the links to the CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) were far more extensive. Es Satty was an informant until the terrorist attack of August 17, 2017 and had a dead letterbox to communicate with his local intelligence officer. No messages were sent via the adamperez27177@gmail.com email address. Both just wrote drafts for each other. It is also possible to send a once usable number combination to a mobile phone number so one has no access even with the password. The Commission
It inevitably and then again the question why CNI (Centro Nacional de Inteligencia) has not prevented the terrorist attacks on August 17, 2017. One possible answer comes from the Catalan regional party (Partit Democrata Europeu Catala/PDeCAT). In April 2018 it set up a commission to investigate the terrorist attacks and asked several questions to the central government.The recruitment of jihadists from 2006 in which Es Satty was said to be involved was also considered.
