[Inquiry] Pension System - One System for Everyone

Siehe auch:
[Anfrage] Rentensystem - Ein System für alle

The following request was made from January 7th 2026 to several members of all major parties in the German Bundestag. The reaction or lack of reaction of the members of parliament is documented below.

Dear Member of Parliament,

According to the ARD-DeutschlandTrend survey 83% are in favor of including civil servants, self-employed and politicians in the statutory pension insurance system. 81% are against raising the retirement age and 76% are against lowering the pension level.
https://www.tagesschau.de/inland/deutschlandtrend/deutschlandtrend-dezember-100.html
According to the German Pension Insurance (DRV) the average pension in Austria is 159 Euro higher because almost all employment groups contribute there.

Will you advocate for the introduction of this in Germany?

Best Regards
Xaver Philipp Schlesinger

Wirth, Christian:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

My AfD parliamentary group's motions refer precisely to this issue.

Sincerely

Haise, Lars:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

vielen Dank für Ihre Anfrage, die ich gerne beantworten möchte.

Regarding the pension concept, I would like to refer you to the Alternative for Germany's (AfD) program: https://www.afd.de/sozialkonzept/#27

Here you can find all the key points of our vision for a sustainable pension system. The pension concept also includes abolishing politicians' pensions and requiring civil servants to contribute to the pension insurance system.

I hope I have answered your inquiry satisfactorily. Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely
Lars Haise

Rothfuß, Rainer:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

Thank you for your message and your interest in pension policy. I share your concerns and am therefore working strongly with the parliamentary group to advocate for the urgently needed pension reform.

First, I would like to recommend the presentation given at our constituency office by our fellow Member of Parliament Ms. Gerrit Huy who plays a key role in the parliamentary group's work on pension policy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQheP-4mE_o

Regarding your questions, please see our key points paper on old-age security from 2022, https://afdbundestag.de/eckpunktepapier-alterssicherung/ and our 2025 election manifesto, https://www.afd.de/wahlprogramm-rente-soziales/ we demand a strengthening of the statutory pension insurance system through various immediate measures. Among these measures we advocate that members of parliament and politicians pay into the pension fund - a motion from our parliamentary group in July 2025 aims precisely at this, in order to create fairness and relieve the burden on the system. Similarly we support the inclusion of civil servants and the self-employed to secure the pension level and prevent poverty in old age as has been successfully practiced in Austria (see the AfD position paper).

At the same time we strictly reject any increase in the retirement age and demand that the standard retirement age be maintained at 67 as well as a pension without reductions after 45 years of contributions.

I will work with the parliamentary group to advocate for the urgently needed reforms and immediate measures.

Sincerely
Andrea Landerer

Götz Frömming through his research assistant Gerald Hübner answered with yes. However publication of the answer was prohibited.

Protschka, Stephan:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

Thank you for your message and the survey results you mentioned as well as the comparison with the Austrian pension system.
Security in old age is a key issue that rightly concerns many citizens. It is true that surveys show considerable skepticism regarding raising the retirement age and lowering the pension level. We in the AfD not only take this concern seriously but also expressly share it as the structural deficiencies of the German pension system already have a noticeable impact on many pensioners and will worsen without fundamental reforms. At the same time however it must be noted that simply transferring systems from other countries such as the Austrian model to Germany is not possible.
The pension systems differ significantly in their structure including demographics, contribution assessment, government subsidies and the role of supplementary pension schemes. We in the AfD not only take this concern seriously but also explicitly share it as the structural deficiencies of the German pension system already have a noticeable impact on many pensioners and will worsen without fundamental corrections. A blanket inclusion of all occupational groups in the statutory pension insurance system would also entail significant interventions in existing pension and retirement systems and create new injustices without automatically solving the long-term financing problems.
From the perspective of the AfD parliamentary group the focus should instead be on the sustainable stabilization of the pension insurance system through sound economic and labor market policies, limiting uncontrolled immigration into the social security system and strengthening the contribution base through higher employment and productivity. The goal must be to secure an adequate pension level without placing an undue burden on younger generations.
A reform of the pension system should therefore be holistic, fair to all generations and realistic. Survey results provide an important snapshot of public opinion and an expression of legitimate concerns within the population, but they cannot replace a responsible and sustainable long-term design of the pension system.

Sincerely

Stephan Protschka

Schielke-Ziesing, Ulrike:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

As the AfD parliamentary group we don't pay much attention to polls, but rather adhere to what we believe to be factually correct and what the citizens want as is the case here:

You yourself pointed to the example of Austria there decades ago they began transferring civil servants into the statutory pension insurance system, a long-term project that we also consider sensible for Germany. Because we want to lead by example we have already submitted a motion to parliament - ??several times - entitled "Reform of Politicians' Pensions - Including Members of the Bundestag in the Statutory Pension Insurance System" which demands precisely this. However the enthusiasm of the other parliamentary groups is rather limited.

Regarding your other question: As the AfD parliamentary group we firmly reject a higher retirement age. Here too a look abroad shows that the crisis of the statutory pension system is homegrown.

Other countries are able to finance significantly higher pension levels without requiring employees to work themselves to exhaustion. This would also be possible here. The current attempts to encourage employees to work longer are primarily due to the fact that fewer and fewer contributors have to support benefit recipients who have never paid a single cent into the social security system.

This applies equally to all social security systems including the pension fund which has already been overburdened with non-contributory benefits for decades. There is much to be done here as well.

I am attaching our latest motions on the topic of pensions. I hope you will find further information there that clarifies our position!

Kind Regards
Ulrike Schielke-Ziesing

Hermeier, Mareike:

Dear Xaver Philipp Schlesinger,

The Left Party has been advocating for many years that civil servants and members of parliament contribute to the statutory pension insurance scheme. https://www.ihre-vorsorge.de/rente/nachrichten/bundestag-debattiert-linken-antrag-zur-rentenpflicht-fuer-beamte

Sincerely
Dr. Peter Frigger

Bünger, Clara:

Good day Mr. Schlesinger,
Thank you for your message. We, as the Left Party, are against raising the retirement age and against lowering the pension level. We advocate for a higher pension level of 53 percent and a system into which everyone contributes: employees, civil servants, the self-employed and politicians. We also advocate for a solidarity-based minimum pension of 1,400 Euro which protects people from poverty in old age even if their employment history is not without gaps and which finally recognizes the value of activities such as caregiving, childcare and other essential social tasks.

Sincerely,
On behalf of
Annika Bächle (she/her)

Brückner, Maik:

Hello Xaver Philipp Schlesinger,

Thank you for your letter and the information on the current survey results and the international comparison.

The points you raised address key demands of The Left Party. We have long advocated for a fundamental reform of the statutory pension insurance system, moving towards a solidarity-based, employment-based insurance system. According to our concept all employed persons—including civil servants, the self-employed, members of parliament and ministers—should contribute to the statutory pension insurance system. This would broaden the financing base, stabilize the pension insurance system and enable higher pensions in the long term, as the example of Austria demonstrates.

We also firmly reject any further increase in the retirement age. Many people are already unable to work until the regular retirement age due to health reasons. Instead we demand a stable pension level of at least 53 percent and poverty-proof pensions that guarantee a secure standard of living.

The broad public support for these positions reinforces our commitment to continuing to exert political pressure for a fair and equitable pension reform. We are consistently advocating for this both in the German Bundestag and in the public debate.

Sincerely

On behalf of Daniel Bache
Research Associate
(he/him)

Zerr, Anne:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,
Thank you for your letter and the helpful reference to the figures. Yes this is precisely what Anne Zerr in the Committee on Labor and Social Affairs and the Left Party parliamentary group in the German Bundestag are advocating for. We are also opposed to raising the retirement age and lowering the pension level (hence our abstention in the last pension vote).

Sincerely
On behalf of Coco Aglibut

Bartsch, Dietmar:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

Thank you for your inquiry.

A universal pension insurance scheme - that is, a statutory pension fund into which everyone pays, including employees, members of parliament, civil servants and the self-employed - is precisely the model that The Left Party (DIE LINKE) has been striving for and demanding for many years.

Sincerely
Malte Heidorn

Kaminski, Maren:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

Thank you for your inquiry.

As a member of parliament for The Left Party Ms. Kaminski advocates for the introduction of a statutory pension for all employed persons which would include civil servants, the self-employed and politicians. For more detailed information we would like to refer you to the party's platform: https://www.die-linke.de/themen/rente/

With solidarity
Team Maren Kaminski

Hoß, Luke:

Dear Mr. Schlesinger,

Thank you for your inquiry!

Regarding your questions:
We want employees to be able to retire without deductions from age 65 and also at age 60 after 40 years of contributions. No one should have to continue working in old age!
Our proposal for the current pension system is a solidarity-based employment insurance scheme. That is a statutory pension insurance scheme into which civil servants, politicians and the self-employed would also contribute.
We are not only against lowering the pension level, but as an immediate measure, we would like to raise the statutory pension level to 53 percent. You can read more about pensions and our demands and counter-proposals here: https://www.die-linke.de/themen/rente/

Sincerely
Luke Hoß
