[Wirtschaft] Mythos Fetter Staat - Personal

The myth of a large and ever-expanding state is being perpetuated all too often these days. Minimalist state advocates and libertarians such as Milei, Musk, and Krall are making their ideas very popular. The key values are presented below.

First it becomes clear that the federal budget is continuously declining relative to GDP. And personnel expenses relative to GDP also declined until around 2000. In 1969 personnel expenses relative to GDP was still at almost 5%. Since 2010 personnel expenses relative to GDP has been only about 1%. Even measured against the federal budget personnel expenses have fallen.

While the total workforce has increased significantly since 2000 the number of public sector employees has increased significantly less. The total workforce has increased by 18% since 2000. The number of public sector employees in contrast has increased by only 7% since 2000. This means that the number of private sector employees has actually increased by 20% since 2000.

A closer look reveals that especially at the federal level the number of public sector employees has actually fallen by 12% since 2000. The number of employees in the state, municipal sectors and those subject to social insurance contributions have each increased by 10%. The myth of a growing or even out-of-control public sector can thus be considered refuted. In light of this development anyone who wants to speed up bureaucratic processes should also advocate for more public sector employees.
