[Domestic Policy] Evaluating the Tensions and the Situation of white Farmers in #SouthAfrica 2019-08-30

South-Africa has been facing tension for a long time. Although apartheid was abolished again people of a certain skin color are exposed to threats and attacks. In addition politicians either want to expropriate people of a certain skin color or call for violence against them.

The Apartheid

Apartheid was a legal system of racial segregation. It provided significantly lower rights and separate spaces for the non-white population. In South Africa it began after the elections in 1948. After that laws were gradually passed to treat people differently depending on their skin color. [1] [2]

Part of apartheid were among other things different educational standards, the restriction of certain job professions and trade unions for the non-white population as well as political offices. Of course it can be assumed that apartheid has also reduced the chances of advancement for the non-white population. So even after apartheid was abolished in South Africa the population is still facing the consequences. From 1991 apartheid was abolished in South Africa then under Frederik Willem de Klerk and later under Nelson Mandela. [1] [2]

The Old Expropriations

Expropriations by farmers and industrialists have occurred several times in history and just as frequently they fail. The great famine in China and the famine called Holodomor are probably the best known. Usually communist or socialist governments redistribute the land and put it in the hands of unexperienced people.

An expropriation of white farmers because of an unequal distribution of land however already occured in Africa. Under the government of Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe white farmers were also expropriated. Thus the mistakes of the past were repeated with an opposite selection. This led to an unprecedented economic crisis of which Zimbabwe has not recovered until today. Zimbabwe has become an importer from an exporter of agricultural products. Initially famines and later hyperinflation occurred. Zambia on the other hand has benefited from its exports of agricultural products having multiplied after absorbing white farmers from Zimbabwe. [3] [4]

Meanwhile even the government of Namibia has announced the same steps to plan. In Namibia there are many black people in poverty while whites are over-represented among the landowners. President Hage Geingob has announced that the distribution of land is based on colonial expropriation. [5] [G]

The New Expropriations

Although whites account for just 9 percent of the population 72 percent of the agricultural area in South Africa is owned by white farmers. [7] [8] Thus black people in South Africa complain about economic inequality and demand a better standard of living. So far so good. However instead of creating jobs or introducing transfer payments against economic inequality the government wants to expropriate the land of white farmers without compensation. [9] [10] [11]

By the time the ANC came to power 30 percent of the country was supposed to be redistributed in the first five years. So far 10 percent have been redistributed to the black majority. For many this is not enough and gather around the Economic Freedom Fighters and Julius Malema. [8]

Malema in turn is chasing the government with his rhetoric and demand for land. In addition the domestic situation is increasingly escalating. Because of relative prosperity people from neighboring countries have migrated to South Africa for decades. At the same time there have been rising violent conflicts in the country for years which in turn leads to internal migration in the country. [12]

The Violence

The Suidlanders have been founded in response to the increasingly escalating rhetoric of politicians and increasing violence. However the Suidlanders are not simply preparing for expropriation. The Suidlanders are preparing for violent attacks and potentially civil war. Shortly after the end of apartheid in South Africa reports began of attacks on the White minority. And for some years now there are reports in the press of extremely brutal attacks on white farmers and that they are above average victims of violence. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]

There are countless reports of torture, rapes and murders on white farmers. Some have used tools such as blowtorches or drilling machines for the torture. Meanwhile Julius Malema of the Economic Freedom Fighters sings in public about how he wants to murder white farmers. Over the numbers and the murder rate a heated debate has arisen whether white farmers are above average victims or not. [13] [14] [15] [16] [17]

In 2014 the AfriForum organization from South Africa published a report on the phenomenon of murders of white farmers. It is reported that the murder rate of white farmers is three times that of the rest of the population and fourteen times higher than the global average. [18,S.13] The attacks are also described as organized and brutal in the report. They happen in groups and involve the victims being robbed, tied up, tortured and raped. Also reported here are torture methods that are unimaginable. [18,S.14]

Conclusion

Striking is that the distinction of the skin color acts like a substitute and only covers larger problems. Instead of fighting inequality and poverty people of a certain color are fought. An improvement of the situation can not be expected from this. And the way to realization could again demand many sacrifices.

And too often however it is claimed that there is no threat to white farmers in South Africa. This is especially strange at a time when the left-liberal zeitgeist wants to grant asylum to all other people. So while the war ends in Syria and the left-liberal zeitgeist continues to campaign for open borders the situation for white farmers in South Africa can not be bad enough to be noticed.
