Nationalism and patriotism are often used synonymously.
At the same time both terms invoke negative associations albeit to varying degrees.
At this point however should not be distinguished simply by the definition but by the advantages and disadvantages.
It is undisputed that nationalism and patriotism have negative consequences. And of course the negative excesses of nationalism and patriotism are to be rejected. However both do not exist solely as a plague. The idea behind it has positive aspects as well and can be useful.
Regardless of its size the nation-state serves as a format for self-determination and as a representative of one's own interests. For this the nation state offers democracy at a limited level. Depending on the size it is thus a guarantee for participation and protection against foreign rule. This can either be a majority with fundamentally different views or interests inside the nation state, another nation state or confederation.
In addition the nation state serves as a space in which the basic rules of coexistence in the form of a constitution already apply. In this way there is already a basic consensus in the social and democratic debate that can do justice to the local conditions. The opposite is a different nation state, confederation or a majority with a fundamentally different culture, behavior, beliefs, values and norms that wants to impose its will on others. Nationalism and patriotism which are positive in this context defend local living conditions and achievements.
In the nation state better living conditions and achievements can be worked upon in a limited space. In the social or democratic debate potential resistance is limited to the nation state. Nationalism and patriotism which are positive in this context create better living conditions and achievements.
In the case of fundamental disagreement elections decide for new rules of coexistence. Then too much disagreement could lead to conflicts and minorities would be at a disadvantage. If perhaps because a side considers the opposition to be evil, then basic disagreement can turn into aggression. Disproportionate forces could then be justified in such a situation from one side. Nationalism and patriotism which are positive in this context thus manage it to close these gaps and do not even try to incite aggression or manipulate two or more sides against each other.
