Nationalism and patriotism are often used synonymously.
At the same time both terms invoke negative associations albeit to varying degrees.
At this point however should not be distinguished simply by the definition but by the advantages and disadvantages.
It is undisputed that nationalism and patriotism have negative consequences. And of course the negative excesses of nationalism and patriotism are to be rejected. However both do not exist solely as a plague. The idea behind it has positive aspects as well and can be useful.
The home or one's own nation is often described as the place where one can be as one is. But for many it is also the place where the same language is spoken and the same culture, behavior, worldview, values and norms apply. But for all applies that, the home or your own nation is the place one is missing, if one has not seen it for too long. And for this understanding of one's home or own nation it does not need the permission of any government or state.
In Germany nationalism and patriotism invoke negative associations albeit to varying degrees. This is not least like that because of the destructive experience that was made with nationalism or patriotism. In this context for example a part of the German national anthem was banned because it is seen as an appeal to put oneself above others. No home or nation is above all. However such an experience should not prevent one from advocating for the well-being and progress of one's home or nation.
In this context there is also the contradiction when it comes to achievements and negative excesses of the own home or nation. Werner Heisenberg, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Caspar David Friedrich are in some way German heritage. Much too often however such people or their accomplishments are taboo. In contrast it is often considered indispensable that the negative excesses such as wars of a nation are representing the population. Nationalism and patriotism which are positive in this context cause the achievements to increase and diminish the negative excesses.
At this point the well-being and progress of one's own home or nation should not be rejected together with the negative excesses of nationalism and patriotism. Rather such a situation reveals the need for nationalism and patriotism that aims at the well-being and progress of one's home or nation without conftonting another homeland or nation. It's not that those who call themselves nationalists or patriots own their home or nation alone. They are not the only ones who love their home or nation. There are others as well.
