DITIB is the largest Islamic organization in Germany and maintains about 900 clubs and mosques in Germany.
DITIB is subordinate to the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi).
The imams sent from Turkey to DITIB are thus de facto civil servants of the Turkish state.
Due to various controversies DITIB was repeatedly considered by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz).
So far however this never happened.

The Armenian Genocide was the systematic genocide of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. The number of people killed in the massacres and death marches that took place in 1915 and 1916 considered to be between several hundreds of thousands and several millions. Various historians and states around the world recognize the genocide of the Armenians as a fact. The official Turkish historiography and the government of the Turkish Republic on the other hand denies the genocide of the Armenians and describe the events as war-related and necessary for security. For this purpose it is claimed that Armenians betrayed the Ottoman Empire, supported its former opponents of the war, in their turn committed massacres of Muslims and consequently were collectively punished.
In the course of the vote in the German Bundestag to recognize the Armenian genocide there was massive resistance from Turkish associations, organizations and also DITIB. An alliance from the Turkish community of Berlin, the Union of European Turkish Democrats (Union Europäisch-Türkischer Demokraten/UETD), DITIB and others organized demonstrations against the recognition on June 2, 2016. And in a joint letter DITIB also called on the members of the Bundestag to decide against the recognition. [6] [7]
After the recognition by the Bundestag DITIB invited various politicians from breaking the fasting during Ramadan (Iftar). Among them was the then Bundestag President Norbert Lammert (CDU) and the Minister of State for Integration Aydan Özoguz (SPD) which had not voted against the recognition. [5]
