Unfortunately fake news as now part of the German media landscape.
But Marie Sophie Hingst has gone so far and falsely claimed that large parts of her family were killed in the Holocaust.
Hingst has been known to write the alleged stories of her Jewish ancestors on her blog "Read on my dear, read on" since 2013. For this purpose Hingst filed 22 so-called "Pages of Testimony" at the Yad Vashem Memorial in Israel as if large parts of her family had died in the Holocaust. Hingst has made her grandfather a Protestant pastor a prisoner in the Auschwitz extermination camp while there are no traces of other allegedly Jewish family members. Hingst was flown by the Berlin historian Gabriele Bergner and archivists from Stralsund who found that most of the family members she mentioned did not exist and that Ms. Hingst came from a Protestant family. Hingst's behavior at least appealed to the sympathy and compassion of her readers. By inventing victims however she behaved like a fraudulent fundraiser. This has damaged the credibility of journalists in a special way. Furthermore it is particularly irresponsible to invent victims as it could also be exploited by deniers of these crimes.
In an article from February 2017 which was also printed by the German newspaper Die Zeit she described alleged sex education she had taught. The article was written by Hingst under the pseudonym Sophie Roznblatt. Among other things she claimed that the number of rapes within ten years was reduced from 1,000 to 2 per year. [11,de] [11,en] Die Zeit has now confirmed that the scenes are probably largely invented. [12]
Because they sound beautiful and successful, Hingst has certainly made many hopes with her stories and invited them to take the topic lightly. However it is at least irresponsible to offer invented solutions to such a serious issue when there is a possibility that someone may rely on it.
Hingst was online with her blog "Read on my dear, read on" since 2013 and is said to have had 240,000 regular readers. In 2017 she was voted "Blogger of the Year" by the "Golden Bloggers" and in 2018 she received the "Future of Europe" award from the Financial Times for an essay. [2] [10] [10,archive]
