[Fake News] How the press turns anti-Jewish perpetrator into victims 2019-04-05

According to experts increasing Islamophobia is responsible for the fact that young Muslims are anti-Jewish. According to this many Muslim youths justify their anti-Jewish and misanthropic attitudes by the fact that they are disadvantaged and discriminated against by Islamophobia itself. This finding is evident from a documentary "Extreme out – Empowerment statt Antisemitismus" (Extreme out - Empowerment instead of anti-Semitism) published by the Federal Agency for Civic Education (Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung/BPB). That's what the German newspaper "die Welt" wrote. [1] [1,archive]

The goal of the three-year project from 2015 to 2018 was indeed to illuminate and work on anti-Semitic attitudes among Muslim youth. The aim was to help young people feel self-determined and part of German society. [2]

Abschließend sind der Aspekt der Diskriminierungserfahrung und dem Status in der Aufnahmegesellschaft als Faktoren zu benennen. Dabei wird z.T. intensiv diskutiert, inwiefern Antisemitismus bei muslimischen Jugendlichen mit Islamophobie und eigenen Diskriminierungserfahrungen zusammenhängt. In seiner umfangreichen Studie „Antisemitismus und Diskriminierungswahrnehmung junger Muslime in Europa“, für die er mit 117 männlichen Jugendlichen Interviews führte, verweist Jikeli in diesem Zusammenhang auf das langjährige Modell der Staatsbürgerschaft auf Basis des ius sanguinis, sprich auf Basis einer Abstammungslinie und der Zugehörigkeit zu einer „Ethnie“ in Deutschland. Dies zeigt, obwohl sich das deutsche Recht diesbezüglich nach 2000 geändert hat, indem auch dem Geburtsort für die Staatsbürgerschaft Bedeutung zukommt, seine Wirkung:

Die Mehrheit der Interviewpartner in Deutschland identifiziert sich nicht als Deutsche, auch trotz ihrer deutschen Staatsangehörigkeit und ihrem Gefühl, in Deutschland zu Hause zu sein. (...) Diskriminierung und Ablehnung seitens der Mehrheitsgesellschaft sind relevante Faktoren für eine nicht-Identifizierung als Deutscher.

Finally the aspect of discrimination experience and status in the host society are to be cited as factors. It is in part intensely discussed to what extent anti-Semitism in Muslim youth is related to Islamophobia and their own experiences of discrimination. In his extensive study "Anti-Semitism and Discrimination Perception of Young Muslims in Europe" for which he interviewed 117 male adolescents Jikeli refers in this context to the long-standing model of citizenship based on ius sanguinis that is based on lineage and ethnicity an "ethnic group" in Germany. This shows that although German law has changed in this respect after 2000 by also giving importance to the place of birth of citizenship its effect:

The majority of interviewees in Germany do not identify themselves as Germans despite their German nationality and their feeling of being at home in Germany. (...) Discrimination and rejection on the part of the majority society are relevant factors for non-identification as a German. [2,p.33/34]
This then becomes the general result.
Viele Jugendliche rechtfertigen ihre antisemitischen und menschenfeindlichen Einstellungen dadurch, dass sie durch die zunehmende Islamfeindlichkeit selbst abgewertet und diskriminiert werden.

Many adolescents justify their anti-Semitic and misanthropic attitudes by being devalued and discriminated against by Islamophobia itself. [2,p.151]
However the source reference on page 33 has a different conclusion.
Die verallgemeinernde Rede von Islamophobie kann die Unterschiede nicht fassen und macht somit aus jeder berechtigten Kritik an Religion und politischen Artikulationsformen eine Art Rassismus. Dieses Zukleistern des Unterschieds kann nur gelingen, wenn MigrantInnen über ihren Opferstatus wahrgenommen werden, anstatt sie als politische Subjekte zu begreifen. ...

In der Diktion des ZfA werden die TäterInnen, die antisemitischen »Jugendlichen«, zu Opfern der Diskriminierung, der Islamophobie. Im weiteren Verlauf dieses Zirkelschlusses ist die Kritik an diesem Antisemitismus – als Teil der islamophoben Strategie – Ursache desselben.

The general assumption of Islamophobia can not grasp the differences and thus makes any legitimate criticism of religion and political forms of articulation a kind of racism. This mismatching of the difference can only succeed if migrants are perceived as victims rather than as political subjects. ...

In the diction of the ZfA the perpetrators the anti-Semitic "youth" become victims of discrimination of Islamophobia. In the further course of this circular conclusion the criticism of this anti-Semitism - as part of the Islamophobic strategy - causes it. [3]


Interestingly Lamya Kaddor who worked as a writer on the documentary "Extreme out – Empowerment statt Antisemitismus" (Extreme out - Empowerment instead of anti-Semitism) also clarified the message. [4]

Verifiable are also the views towards Jews by country. And it are the Muslim countries from the Middle East and North Africa that are particularly hostile to Jews.

Pakistan, Indonesia and Morocco are not neighbors of Israel and have not yet been at war with Israel. The argument of the direct influence of the Middle East conflict on anti-Semitism is correspondingly weak.

Wir erleben eine gefährliche Entwicklung in der Wissenschaft und in vielen Zeitungen. Auf der einen Seite investiert Katar, saudische Milliardäre und die Türkei viel Geld, finanzieren viele Studien und ganze Forschungszentren im Westen, um das Thema "Islamophobie" salonfähig zu machen.

We are experiencing a dangerous development in science and in many newspapers. On the one hand, Qatar, Saudi billionaires and Turkey are investing a lot of money, financing many studies and entire research centers in the West in order to make the topic of "Islamophobia" socially acceptable.

On the other hand, some Jewish activists and intellectuals are making strange alliances with the Islamist federations and Al-Ahmadiyya group and even with Erdogan supporters to appear tolerant and willing to talk.

On a third level, in the chairs and editorial offices of many newspapers there are left-wing-socialized scientists and journalists on the ground who see the postcolonial discourse, multicultural ideology and the guilt of the West against the third world as the basis of their work.
