Deniz Yücel is a journalist of German nationality and of Turkish origin.
Yücel was in custody from February 14, 2017 until February 16, 2018 for alleged terrorism propaganda.
The public sympathy during his detention was very large in Germany.
And although there are various controversies about his texts he didn't deserved this treatment.
Billy Six is a German journalist for reports from abroad. Six was arrested without warrant on November 17, in Venezuela by the local secret service SEBIN. In December the German embassy contacted him by phone for the first time.
Accordingl to them he is accused of espionage, rebellion and violation of security zones. He is charged with spying for photos of public military parades on the National Day in Fuerte Tiuna on July 5, 2017 and July 5, 2018. However these accusations are baseless in the public military parades spectators have taken photos as well.
As a second point he is accused of rebellion because Six has met with the Farc. This meeting was part of Billy's research for the JUNGE FREIHEIT. Six has already reported from Ukraine and Syria but never led a rebellion.
The final indictment is the violation of security zones at a final rally by President Nicolas Maduro in the presidential election in May 2018. According to his father Six was located 60 to 80 meters behind the security fence and in the public area which was accessible to everyone. There he used the security fence as a support for the camera. That's just logical. If he had behaved wrong there then he would have been arrested on the spot and not half a year later. In addition there is no basis for bringing him as a civilian in front of a military court.
Six is being held in Caracas in El Helicoide. In the fifties El Helicoide was planned as a shopping center but since the eighties the rooms are divided into cells. Today El Helicoide serves as the headquarters of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service SEBIN.
Six is also suffering from dengue fever. And meanwhile he is denied his medication and thus gone on a hunger strike. However the German Embassy rejects the demand for release from arbitrary detention. The request of his parents to get the urgently needed drugs for the dengue fever to Billy and then hand them over at the prison gate was also rejected by the German Embassy. For this it needs a permit from the Venezuelan government the German Embassy said.
The Organisation Reporters Without Borders is also calling for Venezuela to release Billy Six. Reporters Without Borders calls the reasons for the arrest ridiculous. But its press release also contains unnecessary distancing formulations. Six write for the right-conservative JUNGE FREIHEIT and has attracted attention with problematic statements and actions. [1] In the case of Billy Six there is disinterest or silence in most media that reveals the selective understanding of press freedom. A laudable exception is Deniz Yücel who publicly drawed attention to Six. [7]
