The case of Claas Relotius is not entirely revealed yet as the next case already appears.
The Austrian writer Robert Menasse has invented quotes and attributed them to the CDU politician Walter Hallstein (November 17, 1901 - March 29, 1982).
Now the historian Heinrich August Winkler has uncovered the fake.
Together with the political scientist Ulrike Guerot Menasse argues for abandoning the European nation states in favor of an EU superstate. In the dissolution of the nation states he relied repeatedly on Hallstein. Hallstein became the first commission chair of the EU predecessor European Economic Community in 1958. According to Menasse Hallstein gave his inaugural speech in 1958 on the grounds of the Auschwitz extermination camp because one sees in this place where the nation state has led to. In addition Menasse claimed that Hallstein had demanded the abolition of the European nation states:
The political scientist Ulrike Guerot was according to their own information not informed about the fakes. Guerot has proclaimed the European Republic which is to replace the European nation states in an art action in various European cities with Menasse and the theater-maker Milo Rau. Guerot has long argued for the abolition of European nation states. Guerot has just that narrative and has together with all the others who have believed Menasse ignored even obvious facts.
Hallstein invented the Hallstein doctrine with which the recognition of the East-German-State should be prevented. The Hallstein doctrine intended not to establish diplomatic relations with states other than the USSR which recognized the East-German-State. That in the middle of the Cold War this official could have held a inaugural speech on the soil of the People's Republic of Poland is at least implausible. Guerot and others believed him because it suited their narrative.
Menasse falsified and reinterpreted messages in the name of what he thought was right. His colleagues Anja Reschke and Georg Restle from public broadcaste also suggest this. Both criticize the neutrality requirement for journalists. Both have called for journalism to report oriented on values and demonstrate their attitude. Restle admits that journalists always include their own attitude when selecting and sorting out news. Instead of a balanced, critical and neutral reporting he argues that journalists should be humanistic. Reschke directly paints the oversized straw man. According to her democracy is endangered in Germany and the political situation is comparable to the Weimar Republic. The threat is allegedly from the right. However she does not provide any evidence for this. So both want to cancel the neutrality requirement in favor of a supposedly good cause. [6] [7,S.44-45] [8] [9]
However when journalists do not focus on the facts but on an attitude then this is reflected in the reporting. So the question is what kind of attitude journalists have. According to a study on the views and voting behavior of journalists in Germany a quarter of the journalists choose the vote for the Green-Party. And almost half of the journalists choose the left-wing and Green parties. The conservative CDU/CSU and the marcet-liberal FDP account for only 9 and 7.4 percent respectively. Left and Greens are thus over-represented while other parties are dramatically underrepresented. [10,S.18]
Like the case of Relotius the case of Robert Menasse sheds light on the methods and arrogance of some journalists. More and more journalists don't just report but teach. These journalists are in the spiritual autopilot because of the fight against all political ideologies from the right. If assertions serve this narrative, then hardly any questions are asked. And if the journalists do not draw conclusions then readers have to do it. Criticism of the press is therefore not just serving the wrong people. If the truth supposedly serves the wrong people then something is odd about the right people.
