DITIB is the largest Islamic organization in Germany and maintains about 900 clubs and mosques in Germany.
DITIB is subordinate to the Turkish Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet Isleri Baskanligi).
The imams sent from Turkey to DITIB are thus de facto civil servants of the Turkish state.
Due to various controversies DITIB was repeatedly considered by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz).
So far however this never happened.

On September 29, 2018, the DITIB Central Mosque was opened in Cologne (Germany). It should be an example of interreligious and intercultural dialogue and promote common work for cohesion and coexistence in the city. The former Mayor of Cologne Fritz Schramma (CDU) has been promotin the construction of the DITIB Central Mosque in Cologne for years and wanted to celebrate the opening with the whole city. However Schramma was not invited instead Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan came to open the mosque under massive police protection. But instead of acknowledging the concessions Erdogan accused Germany of discriminating Muslims. This has caused a scandal which is why some have called Schramma and others as useful idiots who are now no longer useful and therefore only idiots. [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]
Between 2nd and 4th January 2019 DITIB invited to the second meeting of European Muslims in Cologne. The event was attended by 100 participants from 17 countries including radical Islamists and members from the Muslim Brotherhood. A spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia said it is known that Turkey supports the Muslim Brotherhood. The Muslim Brotherhood is originally from Egypt and is considered to be the largest movement of Islamists. Although it is an observation object of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Bundesamt für Verfassungsschutz) it is not prohibited in Germany. According to the spokesman of the Ministry of Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia it was therefore worrying: [10] [11] [12]
The European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR) by Khaled Hanafy and Imam Hussein Halawa represents many radical Islamic positions. The founder Yusuf al-Qaradawi pleads in his own show on the Qatari TV channel Al Jazeera for the polygamy of one man with several women to the death penalty for apostasy. And Halawa condemned same-sex relationships in an interview. [14] [15]
The recognition gesture of the Muslim Brotherhood is four outstretched fingers of one hand. Erdogan does this regularly at public events. This is another reason why some warned in advance against the opening of the new DITIB Mosque in Cologne. These voices were dismissed as unfounded. Now it is clear that after only a few months unrestrained radical Muslims are invited to dialogue.

Egypt-born Halawa from Ireland officially serves as secretary-general of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (ECFR). According to the Ministry of the Interior and the Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz) of North Rhine-Westphalia they belong to the Islamist spectrum. The district mayor of Cologne-Ehrenfeld Josef Wirges (SPD) called it explosive that the largest Sunni Islamic organization in Germany invites Islamists and supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood. The liberal Muslim Seyran Ates is co-founder of the Ibn Rushd Goethe Mosque in Berlin in which men, women as well as homosexuals and transsexuals are equal. Ates says that DITIB makes a common cause of radicals: [13]

According to the head of Office for the Protection of the Constitution/domestic intelligence agency (Landesamt für Verfassungsschutz) of North Rhine-Westphalia Burkhard Freier the German Muslim community pursues above all the establishment of an islamic theocracy and in the last consequence also in Germany despite contrary assurances. Freier warned that the increased influence exercised by the Muslim Brotherhood would pose a far greater threat to German democracy than to the radical Islamic Salafist scene.
What the Diyanet and what the Muslim Brotherhood spread here is a very backward-looking Islam. A very anti-German, anti-Germans Islam which is geared to separatism, which is geared to parallel societies, which does not integrate into German society but builds a separate parallel world here while preserving its own understanding of Islam. Homosexuality is a sin. The people who do it will be judged in the afterlife.The closing declaration of the conference stated that there is no German or European Islam but only a global Islam. The conflict of some participants with the free democratic basic order seems to be irrelevant. [16]
