[Commentary] Germany's left celebrates dictators

There is no political system that has survived without any tragedy. However some political systems have a particularly history of tragedies. For example fascism is notorious for the targeted persecution of political opponents and entire groups of people. So if a party would celebrate the founding of the NSDAP today then the outrage would be quite big and rightfully so.

In the Soviet Union and communist China communism became synonymous with expropriations, deportations and in the case of the Soviet Union with the Gulag forced labor system. On December 31, 1918 the Communist Party of Germany was founded. The Communist Party of Germany was founded with the declared goal of ending parliamentary democracy in Germany and building a council dictatorship. To achieve this it attempted a coup on January 5, 1919 by occupying the parliament. However this attempt was stopped by the soldiers of the government.

Among the members of the Communist Party of Germany were Walter Ulbricht, Erich Honecker and Erich Mielke. Ulbricht and Honecker were later heads of state of the socialist republic which was proclaimed in the Soviet-occupied part of Germany. Mielke was head of the notorious Ministry of State Security (Stasi). And all three were feared for their inhuman acts.

Nevertheless the Left Party now wants to celebrate the founding of the Communist Party of Germany. The Left Party invites to a ceremony on January 7, 2019 in the Berlin House of Representatives. The invitation says:
Anlass genug am historischen Gründungsort auf die widerspruchsvolle und wechselvolle Geschichte dieser Partei zurückzublicken und über Schlussfolgerungen für linke Politik heute nachzudenken. [1]
Reason enough to look back on the contradictory and eventful history of this party at the historic founding place and think about conclusions for left politics today.
The mischief and sorrow that the Communist Party of Germany and its successors have done is evident. Instead of keeping silent about it one could remember the victims but not celebrate the perpetrators.
