Nationalism and patriotism are often used synonymously.
At the same time both terms invoke negative associations albeit to varying degrees.
At this point however should not be distinguished simply by the definition but by the advantages and disadvantages.
It is undisputed that nationalism and patriotism have negative consequences. And of course the negative excesses of nationalism and patriotism are to be rejected. However both do not exist solely as a plague. The idea behind it has positive aspects as well and can be useful. People of the same nationality are strangers, if they do not know each other. However these strangers can share the same language, culture, behavior, belief, values and norms in a nation states. By definition foreigners do not have the same language, culture, behavior, ideology, values or norms. Only among similar nation states do people share these aspects.
Nation states have historically been either single-ethnic states or multi-ethnic states where individual groups have lived relatively separated from one another. Such multi-ethnic states in which the individual groups live relatively separated are still Belgium, Iran, Romania, Russia, Switzerland, Slovakia, Spain and Turkey. In this context one could and still can distinguish between strangers with the same language, culture, behavior, ideology, values and norms according to the individual regions and foreigners.
Single-ethnic or multi-ethnic states in which the individual groups can live relatively separately from each other can therefore make strangers be more familiar with each other. And nationalism and patriotism can create that alliance when people share language, culture, behavior, religion, values, and norms sufficiently. Nationalism and patriotism can thus create trust among strangers.
Nationalism or patriotism should not discourage mutual exchange. No nation state offers all achievements in science, medicine or culture. Modern inventions and technologies are already being imported and used outside their countries of origin. But it is little or inconceivable that nationalists or patriots would cendeom this. In contrast there are social or political achievements such as freedom of expression, secularism, separation of powers or equal rights that are much too often not imported and applied. Nationalism and patriotism which are positive in this context do not shy away from these achievements for the well-being and the progress of their own home or nation.
Nationalism and patriotism that are positive in this context are not mutually exclusive. For the well-being and progress of one's home or nation both co-operate. And a globalization that is positive in this context does not fight the nation state but promotes its well-being and progress.
