Across the countries surveyed, a median of 45% say fewer or no immigrants should be allowed to move to their country, while 36% say they want about the same number of immigrants. Just 14% say their countries should allow more immigrants. (Those who said no immigrants should be allowed volunteered this response.) ...

MEPs Vote for Romania and Bulgaria to Join Schengen

The European Parliament adopted a report supporting Romania and Bulgaria's bids to join the border-free Schengen Zone, despite a lack of consensus among European Council members. The European Parliament on Tuesday adopted a report stressing that Romania and Bulgaria's readiness to join the Schengen Agreement should not be linked to the rule of law in the two countries, despite the lack of consensus on the matter in the European Council, the European Union’s top decision-making body. “The countries have already met the criteria, the Commission has said this, the experts have said this,” the European Parliament’s rapporteur, Bulgarian Socialist Sergey Stanishev, told his fellow MEPs during a debate in Strasbourg on Monday night. “The [EU] Council simply doesn't know what to say. For the past five years the Council has been in breach of European rules failing to adopt a decision on the accession of Romania and Bulgaria to the Schengen area,” Stanishev said. ...

Stelzer wants to make rising crime among asylum seekers a central issue

LINZ / STEYR / VIENNA. The number of knife attacks in Austria has increased by 300 percent within ten years. Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) admits: "We have a problem with a group of young Afghans."
"This group gives us an above-average amount of work," said the country's top police officer, Andreas Pilsl, more than two years ago in an interview with OÖNachrichten. A warning, which in view of the bloody deed in Steyr wins explosive. Provincial Governor Stelzer also points out: "Criminal age may not be a free ticket to live outside our legal system, so we can not talk well and certainly not close our eyes to it." This mistake was made in the problem group of Chechens years ago. That can not and will not be repeated. " The provincial governor has therefore today asked State Police Director Andreas Pilsl during a conversation to submit a current status report to the State Security Council meeting on 17 December. In addition, one expects recommendations on how to handle this problem. In general, it is the great challenge that the mood in the population does not tilt: "We have to make it clear that the vast majority of asylum seekers is not criminal and needs our support. Therefore, the asylum seekers, who permanently violate the law, must be consistently prosecuted and deported. "In addition, it needs faster asylum procedures, it is still too slow, until the final decision is present. Again and again it comes to crimes of punishable asylum seekers. Only recently, an 11-year-old Afghan man, armed with a knife, was said to have robbed a guy at Linz Station. Not an isolated case, as evidenced by the crime statistics. "It can not be that these guys dance around on our nose," says Stelzer. FPÖ head of club Herwig Mahr also sees "an urgent need for action": "The country's security council will meet next Monday, with this Afghan problem at the top of the agenda," Mahr said in a press release on Tuesday. At this meeting all possibilities were to be examined - "also sharper integration measures", so the club chairman. ...
